What Is Scaling & Root Planing?
Scaling and root planing is a two-step procedure:
-
Scaling removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria from the surface of your teeth and below the gum line.
-
Root Planing smooths the root surfaces, helping the gums reattach to the teeth and making it harder for bacteria to accumulate again.

This treatment is often the first line of defense against periodontal disease and can help prevent the need for surgery later on.
Who Needs It?
You may benefit from scaling and root planing if you’ve been diagnosed with early-stage to moderate gum disease (periodontitis) and exhibit signs such as:
-
Bleeding gums when brushing or flossing
-
Persistent bad breath
-
Gum recession or tenderness
-
Deep pockets between teeth and gums
-
Loose or shifting teeth
What to Expect During Treatment
Scaling and root planing is performed under local anesthesia to ensure comfort. Depending on the severity of your case, treatment may be completed in one or two visits. After the procedure, mild soreness is common, but it typically resolves within a few days.
Your gums may begin to heal and reattach to the teeth, reducing pocket depth and inflammation.
Aftercare & Maintenance
Following scaling and root planing, we may recommend:
Frequent Cleanings
(every 3–4 months) to monitor gum health
Antibacterial rinses
or localized antibiotics

At-home oral hygiene
instructions tailored to your needs
Keeping your gums healthy after treatment is key to preventing disease from returning.
Don’t Ignore the Signs of Gum Disease
Scaling and root planing is a proactive, effective way to stop gum disease before it leads to more serious health issues—or tooth loss.
